An 18-year-old Brazilian gamer has been arrested after confessing to killing a female rival in Call of Duty: Mobile and uploading a video of her bloodied body on social media.
Guilherme Alves Costa, 18, fatally stabbed Ingrid Oliveira Bueno da Silva, 19, after she went to his home on Monday, hoping to take part in a joint competition, reported the New York Post.
The incident came to light after fellow gamers alerted authorities after seeing the graphic video of da Silva's dead body on WhatsApp. Her body was later found by Costa's brother at his home.
"You're thinking it's ink or that it's edited or something, but it's not." Costa, who played under the name "Flashlight" for the team Gamers Elite, reportedly said. "I really killed her, got it? I've got a book, too. I asked some people to share it. I hope you read it. It contains some truths."
The book mentioned by Costa is a 52-page manifesto in which he talks about the murder while complaining about being tired of life. He said his inability to connect with others and being tired of life made him commit the gruesome act.
After fleeing the scene, Costa reportedly called his family to say that he was about to commit suicide but was talked out of it by his brother. His brother also urged him to surrender before the police, which he did.
When quizzed about the motive for the murder, Costa told police, "Because I wanted to." He later added that he "knew the seriousness of the situation."
He also told police that the victim had "crossed [his] path."
The death of da Silva, who known as Sol in professional circles, was mourned by her team Fantastic Brazil Impact on Twitter.
"We are heartbroken to learn about the tragic loss of Sol (Ingrid Oliveira Bueno da Silva). We condemn the actions against Sol and believe that gaming and esports should be a safe space for latinx women," the post read.
Meanwhile, a representative of the Gamers Elite said the team's leadership had never met Costa and expressed shock at the murder.
