The highly anticipated “Scarface” reboot has finally found its director.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, 48-year-old filmmaker Luca Guadagnino will be donning the director’s hat for the upcoming project. Guadagnino is known for directing the critically acclaimed movie “Call Me By Your Name.”
The story of the movie was penned by the dynamic duo of Joel and Ethan Coen. The Coen Brothers are famous for writing and directing some of the greatest movies of all time like “No Country For Old Men,” “Bridge Of Spies,” “Fargo,” and “A Serious Man.”
The project will be distributed worldwide by Universal Pictures.
The original “Scarface” movie hit the theaters in 1932. Directed by Howard Hawks, the movie was met with positive response. Five decades later, in 1983, filmmaker Brian De Palma came out with a remake.
The 1983 film told the story of a Cuban refugee named Tony Montana (played by Al Pacino) who built a strong drug empire in Miami. However, things took a U-turn when he became one of the most powerful persons in the world. His own paranoia began to plague his empire.
Interestingly, the movie did not receive good reviews and was criticized for having too much violence and graphic language. However, the feature film has now taken a “cult-classic” status and is considered to be one of the best movies of all time.
In 2008, the American Film Institute (AFI) included “Scarface” in the list of top 10 movies made on the subject of crime and gangsters.
The film currently holds a score of 81% on review site Rotten Tomatoes.
Guadagnino is busy these days in writing the script for the “Call Me By Your Name” sequel. He recently confirmed that the original cast of the movie will be returning for the second movie, as well.
In an interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica, the filmmaker revealed that Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, and all the supporting cast of the first film will be returning for the sequel. The sequel will be based on the second book in the same universe entitled “Find Me,” which takes place 10 years after the original one.
