Cam Newton Trade: Redskins, Patriots, Dolphins Have Best Odds To Acquire Panthers' Quarterback
Cam Newton has quickly become the best quarterback available. Tom Brady and Philip Rivers have found new homes in 2020 free agency. Nick Foles was traded to the Chicago Bears.
Teddy Bridgewater is also off the market after reportedly signing a three-year contract with the Carolina Panthers. The team has allowed Newton to explore the trade market, though the quarterback might end up being given his release.
Where will Newton end up next season?
FanDuel Sportsbook has pegged the Washington Redskins as the favorites to land the 2015 NFL MVP with +125 odds. Washington took Dwayne Haskins with its first pick in the 2019 draft. The quarterback had a poor rookie season, and it isn’t a guarantee that he’ll be the Redskins’ starter in 2020.
Washington has reportedly had conversations regarding Newton. New Redskins head coach Ron Rivera coached Newton during his entire career with the Panthers.
The New England Patriots (+170) are second on the list of potential Newton suitors. The team doesn’t have a proven starter on the roster now that Brady is reportedly headed to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
New England is not expected to spend big on a quarterback. The team could always give Jarrett Stidham a chance to earn the starting job. The Patriots selected him in the fourth round of last year’s draft.
A healthy Newton could give New England a real chance to win the AFC East for a 12th straight season. The Patriots had the NFL’s No.1 ranked defense in 2019.
The Miami Dolphins (+250) are the third team that’s considered to be a real player for Newton. Miami appears likely to draft a quarterback with the No.5 pick in the 2020 draft, in addition to bringing in a veteran signal caller.
The Dolphins went 5-11 last season, though the team won five of its last nine games. Ryan Fitzpatrick has one year and $8 million left on his contract with Miami.
The Jacksonville Jaguars (+900), Las Vegas Raiders (+1000) and Denver Broncos (+1800) are considered to be long-shot contenders for Newton.
Newton only played two games in 2019 because of a season-ending foot injury. He had a 94.2 passer rating in 2018 through 14 games before a shoulder injury cut his season short.
