Cameron Diaz has revealed she may have been an unsuspecting drug mule during her early days as a model.
The 49-year-old actress guested on the "Second Life" podcast, where she talked about her struggles as a budding model and why she thinks she may have been used for illegal activity at the time.
Diaz recalled working as a catalog model and moving from the U.S. to Paris after she was able to save enough for an apartment, which she later shared with another girl. "But I was there a full year and didn't work one day," she told host Hillary Kerr. "I couldn't book a job to save my life. Then I got one job but really, I think I was a mule carrying drugs to Morocco — I swear to God."
She said it all started when someone approached her and asked her if she would like to model in Morocco. "This was the early 90s and they gave me a locked suitcase that had my 'costumes' in it," she recalled.
She went on to share that she was already at the airport in Morocco when she was asked to open the suitcase. "I'm this blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl in Morocco. I'm wearing torn jeans and platform boots, with my hair down — this is really unsafe," she explained.
"I told them, 'I don't know, it's not mine. I've no idea whose it is,'" she added, saying she decided to leave the suitcase with customs officials before boarding her flight back to France.
Diaz said she only got lucky since the incident happened at a time when rigid security measures were not yet in place at airports. She also disclosed that the gig was the only one she had since she moved to the City of Love.
Despite her bleak modeling career for a year, Diaz was welcomed with many opportunities after coming back to Paris. Shortly after the Morocco incident, she landed a role in "The Mask," which marked her film debut. She then went on to become one of the highest-paid Hollywood actresses, earning the title of "The Queen of Romcoms" with her films such as "My Best Friend's Wedding" and "The Holiday."
