Camilla Parker Bowles wasn’t necessarily liked during the early years of her relationship with Prince Charles. After all, the royal couple got into a relationship while Prince Charles was still married to Princess Diana.

But throughout the years, Camilla has earned the love and respect of the royal family and the public. On the online forum site Quora, royal fans weighed in on why they think things changed for the better for the mom of two.

Deanna Eppers, an ardent follower of the royal family, said that Camilla has been successful in marrying into the royal family because she has never drawn undue attraction to herself.

“She did not hit the ground running, even though Camilla is quite British and understood many of the ins and outs of being a royal. The Duchess of Cornwall took her time doing walkabouts and charity events. She did not wear clothes that brought undue attention to herself. No, Camilla played it quite cool. She was at Prince Charles side, but he took the lead. Camilla is easy-going, so she doesn’t care if she’s not in the spotlight. She just wants her family to be happy,” she said.

Martin McGregor, a historian, said that Camilla has definitely made an increasingly favorable impression. He also said that he has always liked Camilla.

“I think she has always been more well-grounded than Diana ever was. Diana valiantly battled her way through some very traumatic years for her, made all the harder by her own emotional unsteadiness at times. Camilla approaches problems in a very different way. Basically, she has a good balance of emotional and rational response,” he said.

Prince Charles and Camilla first dated in the 1970s but their relationship was short-lived. Camilla wed Andrew Parker Bowles after she was forced by her dad and Andrew’s brother to do so. This decision left Prince Charles with no other choice but to also move on and marry Princess Diana.
