Canelo vs. Golovkin Trilogy Rumors: Fight Happening After COVID-19 Clears Out
KEY POINTS
- Alvarez will face Golovkin for a third time
- Alvarez needs to dispose Saunders first
- An Alvarez loss may delay a trilogy with GGG
Boxing is one of the sports that has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic, a reason why the Canelo Alvarez vs. Billy Joe Saunders unification fight has now been moved. Originally set for Cinco De Mayo weekend (May 2), the fight has been moved to June.
But given the situation the world is in right now, even that June clash is uncertain. It remains that most will have to keep track of what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will advise regarding the COVID-19 dilemma. However, that may not be the only boxing event getting moved.
According to The Athletic, Alvarez will be facing Gennady Golovkin for the third time after that fight with Saunders. It turns out that both camps have been negotiating for a third fight and it appears that the only thing missing is an official date for the fight. But of course, Alvarez needs to get over Saunders first before anything else.
Although Oddshark.com picks the Mexican to prevail over Saunders, it would be best for him not to take the 30-year-old lightly. Though Alvarez holds the advantage and power, the British put is known for his agility. He will rely on this to tire out and keep his distance from the Mexican.
Once that obstacle is hurdled, it will only be then when Alvarez can turn his attention to Golovkin. Their first meeting ended in a draw while the second one saw the Mexican winning. And while some feel that it makes no sense to see a third fight, it remains one of the biggest and lucrative fights to make.
Golovkin has won two-straight fights since losing to Alvarez. He won via knockout over Steve Rolls and settled for a unanimous decision victory over Sergiy Derevyanchenko. The Mexican, on the other hand, has racked up three straight wins, two via KO.
When Alvarez faces Saunders, expect Golovkin to be among the curious spectators. If Alvarez loses, it could alter plans for a trilogy fight. A Saunders victory will likely result in a rematch - meaning GGG will just have to wait. And with the coronavirus pandemic the world is dealing with right now, the best all fighters and boxing fans can do for now is wait and pray for things to get better.
