'Captain America: Civil War' Toy Image May Reveal Black And Gold Iron Man Suit Ahead Of The Film's Premiere
Despite being one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year, not a whole lot is known about “Captain America: Civil War.” However, thanks to some new images from Hasbro’s selection at the 2016 Toy Fair in New York City, fans can get excited about a potential costume upgrade for Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.).
In its collection of very exciting new toys and collectibles based on the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie are its line of 2.5-inch figurines boasted as “movie-accurate” collectibles. Among them is an action figure that looks like Iron Man wearing a black and gold suit, a distinct change from his usual red and gold color scheme.
It’s worth mentioning that, just because a toy variant exists doesn’t mean that it’s perfectly indicative of what will appear in the movie. Although no one from Hasbro was immediately available to comment, toy-makers aren’t always given a look at the movies they’re designing toys for. However, given the character’s inclusion on the “movie-accurate” toy line, as well as the fact that he’s pictured with a Scarlett Witch figurine that’s very similar to how actress Elizabeth Olsen looks in the films, there’s reason to raise an eyebrow.
This isn’t the first time that rumors of Iron Man getting a suit upgrade in the upcoming film have circulated. In the comics a very different version of Iron Man’s suit is introduced. It is comprised of nano-technology allowing him to don his iconic armor from tiny elements in his body just by thinking about it. Eventually, in 2012, the character began sporting a black and gold suit that looks very similar to the one on the figurine above. While some outlets like ScreenRant speculate that “Captain America: Civil War” will feature this new suit technology, no one has gone as far as to suggest a complete costume change.
As CinemaBlend notes, the Iron Man character has worn several different suits in the movies, not to mention the fact that he showcased an army of them at the end of “Iron Man 3.” So, although it would be surprising to see the character in a suit that’s different from his usual getup, it wouldn’t be outside the realm of the universe’s canon. A report from MoviePilot reminds readers that Tony Stark is essentially the villain in the comic book version of the "Civil War" storyline, and a black suit might be a good way to denote that to viewers.
If “Captain America: Civil War” does decide to give the hero a suit upgrade, it could make good on a promise that the hero off-handedly made in his third standalone film. When Stark encounters Harley Keener (Ty Simpkins) in his garage, the youngster suggests a stealth variant of the armor.
“You want a stealth mode?” he replies “That’s actually a good idea maybe I’ll build one.”
Elsewhere in Marvel Comics history, Stark built himself a black suit that, you guessed it, is designed as stealth armor. The hero’s journey in that movie saw him realize that he’s smart enough to build his way out of any tough situation. With Captain America and his band of heroes stacking the deck against the outnumbered Team Iron Man, perhaps he constructs the new armor to win the fight.
Unfortunately, the mere image of a black suit figurine doesn’t mean that the variant will be featured in “Civil War,” so all of this is speculation at this point. To find out for sure, fans will just have to wait until the movie hits theaters on May 6.
