ABC may have just made the right decision in canceling Mireille Enos’ “The Catch” after two seasons.

According to TV Line, the ratings for the finale episode of Shonda Rhimes’ TV series didn’t impress on Thursday night. On average, Season 2, episode 10 only garnered a total of three million viewers or a 0.6 demo rating in the 18 to 49 demographic. These figures resulted in “The Catch” Season 2 closing at a series low.

“The Catch” Season 2, episode 10 did not necessarily end with major cliffhangers so its cancellation wouldn’t be heartbreaking for its viewers. But executive producer Allan Heinberg revealed that he already has some ideas for Season 3, and he shared them with Entertainment Weekly before “The Mockingbird” aired.

In the episode, Margot (Sonya Walger), Ben (Peter Krause) and Tessa (Philippa Coulthard) went on the run together. This means that Ben was forced to stay with his ex-girlfriend and daughter instead of his fiancée, Alice (Enos). Heinberg explained that they already crafted an exciting storyline for Ben and Alice that will end with the two going their separate ways in the finale.

“We have to keep creating new obstacles and the tension and the fun in Ben and Alice’s relationship so that the audience is never tired of it. We keep discovering new dynamics within it. So I knew they’d be separated by the end of the season, and I knew that Alice would make that sacrifice,” he said.

Due to Ben’s decision to be with Margot and Tessa, Season 3 would’ve kicked off with Alice still worrying about the trio’s newfound closeness. Heinberg said that this will definitely cause tension in Ben and Alice’s relationship. He added that Season 3 would’ve reset the entire show, and the alliances would have also shifted.

Meanwhile, Heinberg also dished on a storyline that wasn’t really explored in the final episode of “The Catch” Season 2. In episode 9, Sophie (Elvy Yost) was shot by Felicity (Shivani Ghai). When Danny (Jay Hayden) came to her apartment, he saw her bleeding out on the ground. In episode 10, it was confirmed that Sophie is alive, and her family wanted to sue whoever was responsible for hurting her.

Unfortunately, viewers will never know whether or not Sophie’s family’s plan to file a lawsuit will push through. But Heinberg said that it’s one of the biggest storylines for Season 3. “Yes, that would be picked up, and we would find out exactly what transpired in Season 3,” he said.

In other news, “The Catch” is not the only show that was canceled by ABC. Another one of Rhimes’ TV series, “Scandal,” will end after its upcoming seventh season. “Dr. Ken” starring Ken Jeong has also been cut. And Regina King’s “American Crime” was canceled after three seasons despite the actress’ awards and the show’s nominations.

Several shows were also renewed by the network, including “Black-ish” Season 4, “Modern Family” Seasons 9 and 10, “Designated Survivor,” “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Once Upon A Time” and more.
