CD Projekt’s ‘Gwent’ Single-Player Campaign Release Date Pushed Back
It’s a sad news day for fans of CD Projekt RED’s “Gwent: The Witcher Card Game.” The Polish developer has apparently delayed the release of the game’s first story-driven, single-player campaign. Instead of launching it this year, the company has pushed back its release date to 2018.
CD Projekt RED co-founder Marcin Iwinski announced the game’s delay on Wednesday via the official “Gwent” website. According to Iwinski, they decided to move the release date of the campaign because they are going to implement changes to the game’s roadmap.
“‘Thronebreaker,’ ‘GWENT’s’ story-driven single player campaign, is moving to 2018. We decided to increase the campaign’s scope and need more time to work on it,” Iwinski stated. “Shifting release windows is always something we approach seriously, however, we’ll never hesitate to do it if we feel you’ll get a better game as a result.”
In addition, Iwinski shared CD Projekt’s plans for “Gwent” next year. “Since 2018 is the year we plan to take ‘GWENT’ out of beta, we’ll be increasing the tempo of multiplayer update releases. We want you to have more fun playing, but we also want to welcome new gamers into an already rolling multiplayer ecosystem. Expect content additions like cards, challenges, vanity items, but also game patches, and balance tweaks to be published more frequently.”
The co-founder also apologized and promised that they will make sure that the final product will be worth the wait. “I would like to apologize [to] everyone who planned to play ‘Thronebreaker’ over the Holidays — I assure you that we will do our best to make the final game worth the additional wait.”
“Gwent: Thronebreaker” is a 15-hour adventure campaign that centers on a character named Meve. Meve is a war-veteran queen of two Northern Realms, who led a guerilla war against Nilfgaard. This story was mentioned in the novels, but it was unfortunately not included in the main games, as per PCGamesN.
“Thronebreaker” is set in the world of “The Witcher” and it is said to have been written by the same team who came up with “The Witcher III: Wild Hunt.” Though the game will focus on Meve’s adventures, players’ choices will determine the outcome of the tale.
On CD Projekt’s online forums page for the upcoming card game, the developer indicated that the price of the game will be revealed when the release date draws near. Also, there’s a gift for players who will be purchasing the first story campaign. CD Projekt says players will get 20 “Thronebreaker”-inspired cards which they can use in their online, multiplayer collection.
“‘Thronebreaker’ features cards crafted exclusively for use in the single player campaign, each one uniquely tailored for storytelling purposes. When the story ends, take a piece of it with you into online battles, with 20 new, ‘Thronebreaker’-inspired cards for your multiplayer collection,” the developer stated.
“Gwent: Thronebreaker” is coming to PS4, Xbox One and PC. Since there is no official release date yet, CD Projekt is encouraging fans to check out the game’s website from time to time for new updates.
