‘Charmed’ Reboot Will Be Different From Original Series, Says CW President
It has been announced that “Charmed,” the cult TV series about witch sisters, will be getting a reboot. Many were excited, but there were also some who weren’t happy with the announcement. Some fans were expecting a straight reboot of their beloved series, but the CW says they’re doing more of a prequel to the show.
CW president Mark Pedowitz said at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter, that the upcoming reboot will be a “self-contained series.” The executive added: “In terms of whether characters or actresses will come into the series, we’ll see what happens as the series goes on; that’s to be determined.”
Pedowitz’s statement comes a few days after the network announced its plan to revive the CBS series, which starred Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs, Rose McGowan and Shannon Doherty, among many others.
The network said that instead of a continuation or a straight revival, the series will be set in 1976. The upcoming series will connect to the original story, according to the network, but how the stories will intertwine has yet to be determined.
Milano has already shared her thoughts about the reboot, saying: “#Charmed fans! There are no fans like you. You’re the best of the best.”
Meanwhile, McGowan is not as impressed by the move. Posting a photo of herself along with her former co-stars, the actress tweeted: “Irreplaceable.”
Combs appeared to be agreeing with McGowan. Referencing McGowan’s tweet when it was first announced that a reboot was being planned, Combs said: “Lamertons.”
McGowan has been adamant that the show and any other beloved series that has already wrapped up do not need a reboot. Answering the CBS’s announcement in 2013, McGowan said: “They really are running out of ideas in Hollywood.”
The original “Charmed” series ran from 1998 to 2006.
