Cher Attends Ex-Husband Gregg Allman’s Funeral In Georgia
Cher paid her respects to her late ex-husband, Gregg Allman, during his funeral in Macon, Georgia on Saturday, June 3.
The singer, 71, was spotted entering the chapel wearing a black and white ensemble. Musician Allman passed away on May 27 due to complications of his liver cancer at the age of 69. He was buried at Macon’s Rose Hill Cemetery where his brother, Duane Allman, was also laid to rest in 1971.
Prior to attending Allman’s intimate service, Cher wrote a touching tweet addressed to the father of her son, Elijah Blue Allman. Cher recounted how shy but kind and loving her estranged husband was. The ex-couple got married in 1975, and they quickly became a singing duo dubbed as Allman and Woman. Cher and Allman ended their marriage in 1979.
According to Entertainment Tonight, Allman was the brainchild behind The Allman Brothers Band, which Duane was also a part of. After Duane’s death, The Allman Brothers Band became a solo act for the late musician. Through the years, Allman released songs that became huge hits such as “Whipping Post,” “Midnight Rider” and “Melissa.”
Meanwhile, Allman fought long and hard against his liver problems. At one point, he was also diagnosed with hepatitis C. In 2010, he underwent a liver transplant. He is survived by his children Elijah Blue, Michael, Devon, Delilah and Layla.
His funeral on Saturday, June 3 was attended by his family and closest friends. However, the funeral wasn’t open to his fans and the public. A photo from the gathering was published Rolling Stone. It featured former president Jimmy Carter and Peter Frampton, as well as Allman’s bandmates Jaimoe, Dickey Betts and Derek Trucks. Allman’s manager, Michael Lehmen, delivered the emotional eulogy.
All of those present at Allman’s funeral wore jeans instead of suits, as requested by his estate. While the burial was private, fans still surrounded the cemetery where the singer was buried. Majority of them wore Allman t-shirts.
Allman was supposed to perform at Macon’s Grand Opera House on Saturday night. However, the singer canceled his 2017 tour plans due to his health issues.
