Chilean Couple Shares Hope For 'A Better Future' As Country's First Legal Gay Marriage
Chile saw its first same-sex couple go through with a legal marriage on Thursday.
Javier Silva and Jaime Nazar became the first two men to exercise their right under the new Chilean law that went into effect.
The law to allow same-sex couples to get married in Chile was approved by Congress and signed by outgoing President Sebastian Pinera in December. The country has battled to get the law passed for about a decade.
"Being the first couple to get married in Chile for us is an honor, something to be proud of," Silva told reporters after the ceremony.
"We never imagined we would experience this moment in Chile," Nazar added.
Silva and Nazar have been together for seven years and have two young children. The couple had a civil union for the last three years which allows same-sex couple to have some legal benefits. They described the ability to get married as the next best step for their family.
"Now our children have the same rights (as other families) and they will be able to have, we hope, a better future, that they will not be discriminated against for having two parents who love each other," Silva added.
Gabriel Boric, who takes office as the new Chile President on Friday, recognized the couples marriage and congratulated them on Twitter Thursday.
"My congratulations to Jaime and Javier for being the first couple to marry under the new #EqualMarriage law. To continue advancing for a Chile with equal rights and freedoms for all people.”
There has been three same-sex weddings that have taken place in Chile in total as of Thursday, CBS News reported.
