The Chinese New Year, which marks the beginning of the Lunar New Year and follows the lunar calendar, will be celebrated across the world on Feb. 1. It is also called the Spring Festival.

Each year has an animal sign assigned to it in the Chinese Zodiac -- Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. These are based on the Moon and have a 12-year cycle. This Year of the Tiger starts Feb. 1, 2022, and ends on Jan. 21, 2023.

It is the 18th year of the lower “8” cycle of the world. Based on the ancient Chinese divination text, Yi Jing, the period between 1984 and 2043 (totaling 60 years) is “fire-wind cauldron,” and the year 2022 is “water-fire completion,” according to The Star.

The Tiger is known as the king of all beasts, and is seated third in the Chinese zodiac order of animals. The zodiac sign Tiger is a symbol of strength, braveness and exorcism of evils. Many Chinese kids wear hats or shoes with a tiger image for good luck.

Last year was the Year of the Ox.

You're a Tiger sign if you were born in the following years: 1902, 1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022.

In Chinese element theory, each zodiac sign is associated with one of the five elements: Gold (Metal), Wood, Water, Fire and Earth. This is the Year of the Water Tiger, while the last was 1962.

Other recent years include 1950 and 2010's Metal Tiger, 1974 and 2034's Wood Tiger, 1926 and 1986's Fire Tiger, and 1938 and 1998's Earth Tiger.
