KEY POINTS

  • Christian Wood is on the radar of several NBA teams
  • The Mavericks could fare better if they tweak rotation to address their struggles
  • Wood could put up better numbers if Jason Kidd gives him more playing time

Christian Wood was one of the big-name acquisitions of the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA offseason, but the 27-year-old has not been utilized as most had expected.

Wood himself has batted for a larger role, and some feel this could be a problem unless head coach Jason Kidd obliges.

Given that scenario, there is reportedly brewing interest from several NBA teams on the 6-foot-9 cager.

Most are monitoring the Christian Wood situation, someone who is playing on an expiring contract.

Wood will be contract extension-eligible by Saturday, December 24, and there has been no movement on Dallas' end as of this writing.

The former UNLV Runnin' Rebel is eligible for a four-year deal, where he could earn as much as $77 million.

This season, Wood has been averaging 17.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 29 regular season games.

While the numbers are not that far off from his career averages, it would be best to note that he is only averaging 27.2 minutes on the floor.

These are a far cry from how he was used by the Houston Rockets, norming 31.4 minutes in 109 regular season games.

As previously reported here on the International Business Times, Wood aired his frustration over his playing time.

"I would love to play more," Wood said last month to Tim McMahon of ESPN. "I've voiced that several times, but I just play my role."

At the time, Kidd and his coaching staff claimed that it would be for the best for Wood and Tim Hardaway Jr. to come off the bench.

However, the performance of the Mavericks has come under the radar.

When Kidd said that, Dallas held a 9-7 win-loss record in the Western Conference. Now roughly a month later, they tote an even 16-16 win-loss record.

Given their erratic run, the Mavericks' coaching thrust may want to look at tweaking their rotation–something that may include trying to use Wood more during games.
