If Urban Meyer returns to coaching, it could be in the same state where he won his last national championship. Multiple reports indicate that the Cleveland Browns could target the former Ohio State head coach for their current vacancy.

Sources have told The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman that Cleveland has a strong interest in Meyer. ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Thursday morning on “Get Up” that the Browns are an “interesting situation to watch” with Meyer because of his relationship with team owner Jimmy Haslam.

It’s been speculated that Meyer could be a candidate to become the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Schefter indicated that Meyer is more likely to end up in Cleveland than Dallas.

The Browns fired head coach Freddie Kitchens after just one season. Cleveland went 6-10 in 2019 after going 7-8-1 in 2018 under Hue Jackson and interim head coach Gregg Williams.

Since taking over as the Browns’ owner during the 2012 season, Haslam has hired four different head coaches.

Meyer stepped down as Ohio State’s head coach at the end of the 2018 season. The 55-year-old went 83-9 with the Buckeyes, never losing more than two games in any of his seven seasons.

Meyer won two national titles with Florida during his tenure as the Gators head coach from 2005-2010.

Cleveland is interviewing former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy Thursday. According to Jim McBride of The Boston Globe, the Browns have been granted permission to interview New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
