Connecticut Schools Go Into Lockdown After Gun Scare Following Sandy Hook Shooting
Schools in Ridgefield, Conn., were locked down on Monday after police were informed that a man was near an elementary school allegedly carrying a rifle, multiple reports said.
"This is Ridgefield Superintendent Deborah Low with an important announcement on Monday, December 17th at 9:00 AM. Due to a report of a possibly suspicious person in the Branchville Train Station area, all schools have been put into lockdown. Branchville Elementary school buses have been diverted to East Ridge Middle School and BES students are in the auditorium,” she said in a statement.
Police were dispatched to the area, including officers from nearby areas of Westport, Danbury, and Bethel.
While it is unclear if the report is true, since Friday, there has been an increased fear concerning gun laws after 20-year-old Adam Lanza went into Sandy Hooks Elementary school in Newton, Conn., taking 26 lives, including 20 children.
President Obama spoke at the interfaith vigil in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 16 in honor of the victims of the shootings, and said, in part “We gather here in memory of twenty beautiful children and six remarkable adults.
"They lost their lives in a school that could have been any school; in a quiet town full of good and decent people that could be any town in America.
"Here in Newtown, I come to offer the love and prayers of a nation. I am very mindful that mere words cannot match the depths of your sorrow, nor can they heal your wounded hearts.
"I can only hope it helps for you to know that you're not alone in your grief; that our world too has been torn apart; that all across this land of ours, we have wept with you, we've pulled our children tight.”
Two of the young victims, Jack Pinto and Noah Ponza, both six-years-old, are expected to be buried on Monday.
As Jack was a huge Giants fan, and more specifically, a Victor Cruz fan, his parents were said to be considering burying their son in Cruz’ No. 80 jersey. Cruz said he was so moved by the impact he had on Pinto’s life, and wrote on his sneakers the night of the Giant’s Sunday game against the Atlanta Falcons, "Jack Pinto, My Hero," "R.I.P. Jack Pinto" and "This one is for you."
