Following the product recall for Contigo Kids Water Bottles for a choking hazard, a series of glass cooktops have been recalled by Whirlpool Corporation (WHR) because they can turn on by themselves, posing a burn and fire hazard.

The recall affects about 26,300 units sold in the U.S. and another 2,800 sold in Canada and 128 sold in Mexico. The recalled cooktops include Whirlpool, KitchenAid, and JennAir brands. The affected cooktops have a glass cooking surface with touch controls in a radiant or downdraft radiant model.

The recalled cooktops were sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Best Buy, and other home improvement, appliance, and other stores as well as online. The cooktops were sold from Mary 2017 to August 2019 for $1,150 to $2,500.

The recalled cooktops were manufactured from December 2016 to July 2019. They have the brand name of the product printed on the cooktop with the model number and serial number printed on the underside of the cooktop.

To repair the burner issue, consumers should immediately contact Whirlpool to arrange for free installation of a replacement cooktop. Consumers are also urged to turn the cooktop off at the circuit breaker until a replacement has been installed. They should also not leave flammable materials or empty cookware near or on the cooktop.

Whirlpool has received 133 reports of incidents, where the cooktop’s heating element turned on by itself. The company was notified of 14 reports of heat damage to nearby items and four reports of items catching on fire. In one instance, property damage occurred, and in two incidents burn injuries were reported.
