Could Queen Elizabeth II Be Proclaimed Empress Of Great Britain?
Queen Elizabeth II currently holds the highest title among the members of the British royal family, but there is a higher title that she may also choose to have.
According to Royal Central, the title of Emperor or Empress of Great Britain is widely regarded as the highest-ranking Monarchial title, while King or Queen, who reigns over a kingdom, is a lesser title than Emperor.
The publication noted that in theory, nothing is stopping Her Majesty from being proclaimed as Empress. However, bestowing the title on herself is not something that she can do. In order to be crowned as the Empress of Great Britain, an act of parliament is required.
However, it is highly likely that the plan to crown the monarch as the Empress of Great Britain would fall at the first hurdle when the members of the parliament get a chance to cast their vote.
In related news, the Queen also made headlines this week after it was revealed that BBC’s comedy shows will be canceled until after Her Majesty’s funeral. In 1952, the network did a similar thing following the death of the Queen’s father, King George VI.
The mourning for King George VI lasted for 12 days, and the same could be expected after the current monarch dies. According to Pop Sugar, BBC’s decision to halt all comedy shows following the Queen’s death would be done after the network faced a backlash in 2002.
At that time, the Queen Mother died and newsreader Peter Sissons went on air to announce her passing in his gray suit and burgundy tie. Following the announcement, Sisson and BBC were criticized due to their lack of formality.
Meanwhile, the Queen also made headlines after it was revealed that the umbrellas, which she uses in public, are custom-made to match her outfits. According to Town & Country, the Queen’s go-to umbrella brand in the United Kingdom is Fulton.
One of the Queen’s favorite umbrella styles is the birdcage, which she inherited from the Queen Mother.
