Could Sam Heughan Play Disney's Hercules? 'Outlander' Actor Responds To Casting Suggestion

Can Sam Heughan go the distance? His followers certainly think so. “Outlander” and “Bloodshot” fans have said that the Scottish actor should play Hercules in Disney’s live-action remake.

Heughan responded to the first suggestion asking if he has to sing, and then he jokingly responded to an edit of his head on the cartoon Hercules’ body, saying that he was totally prepared.

Though he was a villain in this year’s Vin Diesel action movie “Bloodshot,” he’s already proven himself as an action hero on “Outlander.” He plays Jamie Fraser, an 18th century Scottish Highlander who has fought the red coats, pirates and more. Playing a mythological god who is known for his kind heart and bulging biceps doesn’t seem like a stretch.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Dave Callum (“The Expendables,” Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”) will write the script, and Joe and Anthony Russo (“Avengers: Endgame”) will produce. That makes it sound like it’ll be pretty action-heavy, right up Heughan’s alley.

Fans of the Scottish actor have taken to Twitter to keep suggesting Disney consider him for the lead role.

The animated “Hercules” starred Tate Donovan as the adult voice of the hero. Roger Bart was the singing voice. THR notes that other fans are throwing names like Idris Elba and Ryan Gosling in the ring. Meanwhile, Ariana Grande’s recent performance of “I Won’t Say I’m In Love” on the “Disney Family Singalong” has many hoping she’ll play Meg in the live-action feature.

With no release date and the script still being worked on, don’t expect casting announcements for a while.

It’s easy to see why fans are anxious to have Heughan on their screens again. “Outlander” Season 5 only has one more episode left. After Sunday’s finale on Starz, it isn’t clear when the show will come back due to pandemic-related production delays. However, they can rest assured that Heughan will be back as Jamie Fraser in “Outlander” Season 6 eventually.
