A couple in India died after they were attacked by a swarm of bees.
The pair, identified as Bhikhni Devi and her husband Shanichar Mahato, had gone to graze cows and goats in the Maholiya Palha forest next to Jharkhand’s Jeetpur Panchayat Karmatand village when they were attacked by the insects, News18 reported.
The swarm targeted Devi first, which prompted Mahato to run to his wife in an attempt to save her. This, however, caused the bees to attack the husband as well.
Villagers rushed to the scene after they heard the couple's cries for help. They then took Devi and Mahato to the hospital, but the two died on the way.
It was unclear what their cause of death was.
Residents have been forced to live in panic due to the ever-increasing bee attacks in the village, which is under the jurisdiction of the Mufassil police station, according to reports.
Authorities have allegedly taken no concrete measures to address the attacks, and residents have now started treating them as a natural phenomenon or calamity.
A similar incident happened in the Indian state of Himachal in late September when a mother and daughter fell to their deaths into a gorge while running away from a hornet attack.
The mother, identified as 32-year-old Tripta, and her daughter, Isha, were cutting grass on a hill near Chamba district's Bhardota area on Sept. 22 when they were attacked by a swarm of hornets.
Tripta and Isha tried to save themselves and ran away from the swarm. The girl, however, slipped while trying to escape and fell off a cliff. The mother tried to save her daughter and dived in right after her.
Both died after falling into a 656-foot-deep gorge. Their bodies were later recovered by the people who were working with them.
A police team reached the scene after the incident was reported. Both bodies were taken to the Civil Hospital at Tissa for autopsy.
Authorities returned the bodies to their family following the post-mortem.
