A mother and daughter in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh died after falling into a gorge while running away from a hornet attack this week.
The mother, identified as 32-year-old Tripta, and her daughter Isha had been cutting grass on a hill near Chamba district's Bhardota area on Wednesday morning when they were attacked by a swarm of hornets, Indian outlet News18.com reported.
Tripta and Isha — the wife and daughter, respectively, of Khadkiala village resident Man Singh — tried to save themselves and ran away from the swarm.
The daughter, however, slipped while trying to escape and fell off a cliff. Tripta, upon seeing Isha fall, tried to save her daughter and dived in right after her.
Both of them fell into a 656-foot-deep gorge, according to the report.
Their bodies were recovered by the people who were working with them.
A police team reached the scene after the incident was reported, and both bodies were taken to the Civil Hospital at Tissa for autopsy.
The mother and daughter died after falling in the gorge, Chamba police superintendent Arul Kamar confirmed. Police handed over the bodies to their family members after the post-mortem.
The administration provided Rs 30,000 ($405) to the victims' family, tax officer Pawan Thakur said.
A similar incident happened in Hong Kong over two months ago when a social media personality fell to her death after she slipped while taking a selfie at a waterfall.
Sofia Cheung, 32, was attempting to snap a selfie at the edge of a waterfall during a visit to Ha Pak Lai park on July 13 when she lost her footing and fell 16 feet into the pool below. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Cheung's last post on Instagram was on July 8 and featured a photo of her posing on the beach while holding a boogie board. "Better days are coming. They are called: Saturday and Sunday," the caption read.
The post has since been flooded with messages following news of her death.
"RIP. I don't want to believe this happened to you," one user wrote.
"You were an amazing soul, an amazing person," another follower commented. "One thing I can say about you is you did everything you ever wanted. You lived life to its fullest. You conquered a lot, and now you're in a better place. May you rest in peace."
