'Crimes Of The Future': Kristen Stewart Reacts To Walkouts During Film's Cannes Premiere Screening
Kristen Stewart has broken her silence about the walkouts that took place during the screening of her sci-fi horror movie "Crimes of the Future" at this year's Canne's Film Festival.
Viewers reportedly began walking out of the venue only a few minutes into the movie, which premiered at the film fest Monday, due to the many gory scenes in it.
In response to the incident, the 32-year-old actress said Thursday that to her, the movie is "simply sweet," NME reported, citing Vulture.
"It's a lot to take on at first, I guess," she explained. "But to me, the movie is so simply sweet. Yes, we're barrelling towards certain death, for sure. But there's a delicacy to the movie that, even in the gory stuff, I was really bewitched by it."
Stewart then admitted that though people walked out on the movie due to its intensity, she actually finds it beautiful. "Everyone talking about walking out and how intense it was. I was like, 'It's not intense! It's really beautiful,'" she added.
The "Twilight" star went on to share that the audience at the screening didn't know how to react, so it was "dead silent" before the credits started rolling.
"I was like, 'Ooh, people don't know how to feel," she recalled. "They don’t know if they should clap or not.' I felt like it was the f--kin' Will Smith moment where everyone was like, 'Yes? No? No. Okay, actually no!' Like do people have to look to their left and right to see if people like it before they clap?"
Helmed by director David Cronenberg, "Crimes of the Future" is hitting theaters on June 2. Its story centers on a new kind of human species that is adaptive to a synthetic environment and whose bodies go through several transformations.
Interestingly, Cronenberg made a prediction earlier this month that viewers might walk out of the theaters within the first five minutes of the film.
"I'm sure that we will have walkouts within the first five minutes of the movie," the director said at the time. "I'm sure of that. Some people who have seen the film have said that they think the last 20 minutes will be very hard on people, and that there'll be a lot of walkouts."
Stewart will be next seen in the movie "Love Lies Bleeding," which is currently under pre-production.
