A Premier League club reportedly turned down a 6-year-old due to comparisons with Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
Roughly 13 years ago, before his heroic goal helped Liverpool won the Merseyside derby, the then six-year-old Curtis Jones was turned down by Everton simply because he reportedly resembled the attitude of Ronaldo.
Jones is highly regarded as one of the most promising youngsters from the Reds’ academy for the past few years. Many are already convinced that he could establish himself in the first team in the near future. However, according to The Athletic‘s Simon Hughes per This Is Anfield , Everton were concerned about Jones’ “cocky” attitude and decided to pass on the talented kid.
Reports claim that there was a chance Jones could be headed to Chelsea instead, and only Liverpool’s long-time rivals turned him down as a youngster “because he modelled himself on Cristiano Ronaldo.”
Looking back, pundits believe that Everton have overlooked Jones as he was deemed “too cocky” for a six-year-old. The Reds on the other hand, reportedly had no such fear at the time and quickly signed Jones.
“It was concluded that with his birthday coming late in the school year. a social maturity may arrive later than with other players,” Hughes wrote about Jones.
Former Liverpool coach Neil Critchley affirmed the issue about Jones as he prepared to make him the club’s youngest-ever captain in the FA Cup . The then-U23s manager said “self-belief is probably not one of his weaknesses, but that is also why he is who he is.”
Everton may have really missed out on an opportunity to land a future prolific goal scorer in Jones. In fact, Jones' even once scored a stunner for Liverpool against Everton. The highlight-worthy goal was voted the best goal of the FA Cup third round, BBC Sport reported.
Meanwhile, another six-year-old kid made the headlines recently after Barcelona’s official Twitter account reposted one of his incredible videos. Just like Jones, Liverpool native Arat Hosseini is also being compared to a soccer icon. In fact, Hosseini is now being tipped to become the Lionel Messi of the next generation.
The wonder kid has gained popularity through social media and YouTube by often posting video clips showing his incredible dribbling skills, footwork and most especially, his unbelievable six-pack abs.
Hosseini’s talents have already reached Messi and the six-time Ballon d’Or winner himself noted that he sees “a lot of class” in him.
