Brendan Fraser accepted the best actor trophy at the Critics' Choice Awards on Sunday night. The actor can be seen fighting back his tears as he delivered a powerful acceptance speech.

The 54-year-old actor became emotional as soon as the presenter of the award, Angela Bassett, announced the winner. Fraser walked onto the stage and after fighting back his tears, he first thanked the Critics Choice Association for the honor.

Fraser won the award for "The Whale."

"It was Herman Melville who once wrote that there are only five critics in America. The rest are asleep," the actor said and paused while the audience waited for an explaintion. "I don't know what it means either. But I'm sure glad that you woke up for me."

The audience clapped and the actor continued, "Where were you for Furry Vengeance?" he questioned referring to his 2010 comedy movie, which was not received well by the critics.

The actor went on to explain that "The Whale" was all about "love and redemption."

"It's about finding the light in a dark place and I'm so lucky to have worked with an ensemble that is incredible and includes Hong Chau, who should have her own movie based on every character she's ever played," he added.

Fraser also praised his co-star Sadie Sink, who played his estranged daughter in the movie. "Who are you?" he said. "It took me 32 years to get here. Your talent."

He also praised other co-stars and the director of the flick.

"Ty Simpkins: You won every day. Sam Hunter, you're my lighthouse," he continued. "And Daren Aronofsky. I was in the wilderness. I probably should have left a trail of breadcrumbs. But you found me. And like all best directors, you merely just showed me where to go to get to where I needed to be."

Fraser once again paused before sharing a piece of advice for those going through a difficult phase in their life. He said if anyone is struggling with "obesity" or feels like they are in a dark space, then they should walk toward the light and "good things will happen."

The 28th Critics Choice Awards was held at Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles and the ceremony was hosted by comedian Chelsea Handler.
