Emma Corrin, who plays the late Princess Diana in “The Crown” Season 4, has opened up about being hospitalized while filming the Netflix series.
In an interview with Glamour, the 24-year-old recalled how her time filming in Spain had been memorable but at the same time terrifying as she had to be rushed to a hospital after a pool scene. Corrin revealed that she is asthmatic and had been suffering from a bad cough at the time.
Corrin shared that the scene filmed in a “freezing-cold swimming pool” also involved the kids who were playing Princes William and Harry. She described the sequence as “the hardest scene to film” because apart from treading water, she also had to watch one of the children who didn’t know how to swim.
“We were meant to be flying back that night to the U.K., so we went past a hospital to get me antibiotics. The doctors gave me an oxygen test and said, ‘We cannot let you go because your oxygen levels are so low,’ so I was hospitalized,” she recalled.
Corrin had been in Spain with John O’Connor, who plays Prince Charles in “The Crown.” The show creators were trying to recreate the former royal couple’s Australia tour in 1983.
The actress also talked about portraying the late People’s Princess when she was battling bulimia, an eating disorder wherein a patient binge eats then purges, according to Mayo Clinic. Corrin was determined to represent the late royal’s struggles.
“In ‘The Crown’s’ version of events, Diana's relationship with her body is massively dictated by the emotions she's going through. It was very interesting to be reminded how our relationship with food and with our body image, can be so linked to what we're going through emotionally,” she said.
Corrin previously opened up about being under pressure as she stepped into the role and overcoming this problem. In an interview with The Sunday Times, the actress said that she wanted to make Princess Diana proud.
After Season 4 of “The Crown” wraps, fans of the series will see a new actress portraying Princess Diana. In a tweet, it was revealed that Elizabeth Debicki will replace Corrin for the final fifth and sixth seasons.
