A crew member belonging to a Royal Caribbean cruise ship died after he went overboard. The incident on September 22 involved a 35-year-old man from India named Mansley Pereira.

Pereira went overboard when the cruise ship Rhapsody of the Seas was in the port of Dubrovnik. He was a waiter with the cruise line.

Royal Caribbean said, “Mansley committed suicide by jumping into the sea.” A local newspaper in India reported that Pereira has been a seaman for several years.

The local paper also said family disputes could have driven the cruise worker to suicide. However, there were no witnesses, videos or CCTV footage of Pereira going overboard.

The Rhapsody of the Seas departed from Venice, Italy on Sept 21 for a seven days cruise trip. It has now arrived in Santorini, Greece and will return to Venice on Saturday.

A video posted on Twitter showed some people trying to rescue Pereira from the water and a few giving him chest compressions after pulling him into a rescue boat.

According to cruise news, many Royal Caribbean ship employees have gone overboard in the past 10 years and most cases were suicides.

But there is criticism that the cruise line is not taking steps to deploy safeguards to check the spurt in overboard deaths.
