Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has termed the club's current squad "very average" and has criticized them for not caring following their disappointing loss to Bournemouth.

Bournemouth forward Joshua King scored the winner in the 45th minute and that meant, Man Utd were left in the 10th place in the Premier League as the Red Devils continue to experience their worst start in as many as 33 years.

Schmeichel went on to say that Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a lot of work to do before his side returned to the top of their game but in reality, "there's not really a lot he can do."

"I kind of feel for Ole, I think he is stuck between a rock and a hard place. There's not really a lot he can do. The fact is that it's a very average squad of players that he's got. To go to Bournemouth and to, not be bullied off the pitch, but at times played off the pitch, and with only one shot on target, it's bad. We've all experienced games like that where it's not coming off for you and stuff like that. But what really gets to me is the work rate – the work rate is just not good enough," the retired goalkeeper added.

"You play for Man United, you have to work hard for 90 minutes or however long the game is and there are certain players in there who come off the pitch [and] there's no sweat on them, they look like they don't care if those lose the ball or lose a tackle and don't get the ball. For me, that's not good enough," Schmeichel blasted the Man Utd players after their 1-0 loss to Bournemouth at the Dean Court on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Solskjaer acknowledged that his side must improve if they are to give themselves any chance of qualifying for the Champions League.

"We need a response because games like this you need to win if you want to challenge for the top four and we’re disappointed."

"It’s a test of character when you come down to places like this; 1-0 down, half-time. In the second half, at least we went for it. We didn’t stop trying but it was the lack of quality that couldn’t give us the point or three. Two more games before the international break – we’ve got a chance on Thursday to qualify [for the Europa League knockout stage] and then Brighton at home," the Man Utd manager added.
