'Cyberpunk 2077' To Share Same Lore Universe With Tabletop Source Material
CD Projekt Red recently confirmed that "Cyberpunk 2077" will share the same universe as its source material, the tabletop game "Cyberpunk 2020." Previously, many fans believed that while it would share some similarities and names with its source material, it would be based on an entirely different universe. Here’s what we know about this.
According to SegmentNext, "Cyberpunk 2020" designer Mike Pondsmith confirmed the universe that the upcoming CD Projekt Red game will be set in. While this announcement doesn’t confirm a gameplay system in the upcoming RPG game, the lore of the game is expected to be larger, according to Dualshockers.
The "Cyberpunk 2020" tabletop game works similarly to the "Dungeons and Dragons" series, where campaigns are pushed out every now and then. Different players can follow unique ways and adventures to the canon endings of these campaigns. These canon endings are considered to be constant changes in the tabletop game world’s lore, which allows its makers to push the game’s story in that direction.
If the upcoming CD Projekt Red game is truly based on the same timeline as the tabletop game, many "Cyberpunk 2077" fans can look up the events that happen in the campaigns to piece together what happens to certain characters in the RPG.
In the 48-minute trailer, the player is subjected to a personality test, which includes a question on the "Cyberpunk 2020" characters. Reading up on the tabletop game’s campaigns would help orient the player on the game world, its characters, weapons and the overall tone of the series aside from what is currently shown.
For now, CD Projekt Red has yet to reveal any solid details about its release. The developers are on a “when it’s ready” basis when it comes to announcing any major revelations about the game. This announcement leaves developments about the game vague.
Due to its pace, many are expecting the game to be released in 2021 as the developers make sprawling worlds with many sidequests, similar to the "Witcher" releases.
However, "Cyberpunk 2077" is expected to have a major appearance in the upcoming E3 2019 this June where many fresh details about the game could be revealed.
