The Dallas Cowboys haven’t officially decided whether or not Dak Prescott will play Sunday night against the Minnesota Vikings. The quarterback is dealing with a calf strain that he suffered in Week 6 when the Cowboys beat the New England Patriots in overtime.

Prescott finished Dallas’ last contest, and the team had a well-timed bye in Week 7. It appears likely that the injury won't prevent Prescott from starting when the Cowboys return to the field in Week 8.

The walking boot that Prescott was wearing immediately after leading Dallas to victory in New England was nowhere to be found Monday when the quarterback was spotted at the Cowboys’ practice facility. Prescott told reporters he felt “fine,” but he declined to say if he would play in Minnesota, joking that the press needed something to talk about.

“Based on what you saw yesterday, that was very encouraging,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told 105.3 The Fan. “But those things have to be monitored. We have a solid week, which is great to monitor that. I thought [Zack] Martin had a good description of it when he had the calf tear last year. He said some days it feels great and then it feels like you got run over by a bulldozer the next day. But still, I feel very good about where Dak is right now.”

The betting markets seem confident that Prescott will play. Dallas is a 2.5-point road favorite against Minnesota.

This is the third injury that Prescott has dealt with over the last year. A fractured ankle ended his 2020 season in Week 5. Prescott didn’t play at all in the preseason because of a latissimus strain.

None of those ailments have slowed down Prescott through six games. The 28-year-old is among the top MVP candidates. He has 1,813 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, four interceptions and a 115.0 passer rating.

The Cowboys lead all NFL teams with 460.8 yards of offense per game and 34.2 points per game. Since losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the season opener, Dallas has gone on a five-game winning streak.

With a 2.5-game lead atop the NFC East, the Cowboys are overwhelming favorites to win the division.
