Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers Will Start 2020 NFL Season In Hall Of Fame Game
A week before free agency officially begins, the NFL has announced its first game of the 2020 season. The Dallas Cowboys will take on the Pittsburgh Steelers in the annual Hall of Fame Game.
Dallas and Pittsburgh are scheduled to play on Thursday, Aug. 6 at 8 p.m. EDT in Canton, Ohio’s Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. The 2020 Hall of Fame Class will be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, Aug. 8.
Troy Polamalu, who won two Super Bowls and made eight Pro Bowls with the Steelers as a safety, will be among the five modern-era players inducted. Former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher and former Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson will also be included into the Hall of Fame two nights after the game.
Pittsburgh and Dallas will play five exhibition games. Every other team will have a four-game preseason schedule.
The Denver Broncos beat the Atlanta Falcons 14-10 in last year’s Hall of Fame Game.
It’s been five years since the Hall of Fame Game was played on a date later than Aug. 6. That happened when the Minnesota Vikings beat Pittsburgh 14-3 on Aug. 9, 2015.
The Cowboys last kicked off the NFL’s preseason three years ago. Dallas beat the Arizona Cardinals 20-18 in the 2017 Hall of Fame Game.
Most starters typically don’t play in the Hall of Fame Game. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is recovering from an elbow injury that cost him the final 14 games of the 2019 season, and he is highly unlikely to take the field. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott doesn’t have a contract for next season, though the two sides are working toward a long-term agreement.
Both Dallas and Pittsburgh missed last season’s playoffs with an 8-8 record.
The NFL’s first regular-season game of 2020 is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 10.
