It’s looking increasingly likely that the Dallas Cowboys will use the franchise tag on Dak Prescott, but the team is making a final effort to avoid doing so. Dallas has made another contract offer to the quarterback, three days before Thursday’s franchise tag deadline.

The Dallas Morning News’ Calvin Watkins reported Friday that Prescott turned down a deal with $105 million guaranteed that would pay him an average salary of $33 million. According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, the Cowboys have sent Prescott a new proposal, one that would likely give him an even higher yearly salary.

Aaron Rodgers and Jared Goff are tied for third in the NFL with a $33.5 million yearly salary. Ben Roethlisberger is second with $34 million per season. Russell Wilson leads all quarterbacks, making $35 million a year.

Wilson agreed to a four-year, $140 million contract that includes $107 million in guaranteed money in April 2019. Just prior to the start of the 2019 season, Goff signed a four-year, $134 million deal. The Los Angeles Rams gave Goff a record $110 million guaranteed.

The Philadelphia Eagles gave Carson Wentz a four-year, $128 million contract last year. Wentz makes an average of $32 million per year with $107.9 million in total guaranteed money.

If the Cowboys use the franchise tag on Prescott, the two sides will have until July 15 to reach a multi-year agreement. The tag would pay Prescott $26.9 million guaranteed for the 2020 season.

Prescott threw for more yards than all of the league’s highest-paid quarterbacks last season. Only Jameis Winston had more passing yards.

Dallas has paid Prescott $2.723 million in his four seasons with the team. Prescott has been the starting quarterback for the Cowboys in every game since Dallas selected him in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
