Dallas Cowboys Rumors: Contract Extension Given After Trade, Running Back On Team's Radar
The Dallas Cowboys plan to have several big-time pass rushers on the roster in the 2019 NFL season. That includes players other than Demarcus Lawrence, who Dallas is trying to sign to a long-term contract, and Robert Quinn, who was recently traded to the Cowboys from the Miami Dolphins.
Dallas has reportedly given Randy Gregory an extension. The defensive end was suspended indefinitely by the NFL in February for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy, but the team is hopeful he’ll be able to play at some point next season.
Gregory had a career-high six sacks in 14 games last year. He had played just 14 games in his first two NFL seasons.
The Cowboys were in the middle of the pack in the 2018 season with 39 sacks as a team.
The most important players on the Cowboys’ roster are expected to get lucrative extensions soon. Dak Prescott will likely become one of the NFL’s highest-paid quarterbacks before he can hit free agency in 2020. Running back Ezekiel Elliott will likely get a new contract at some point within the next year.
Committing tens of millions of dollars guaranteed to Elliott might give the Cowboys even more of a reason to acquire another running back. Just look at Todd Gurley, who got a big new contract before the start of last season but now faces questions about the health of his knee after being the focal point of the Los Angeles Rams’ offense.
Alabama’s Damien Harris will reportedly meet with the Cowboys Wednesday. The running back is projected to be a second-round draft pick after nearly totaling 3,000 yards on the ground in his last three seasons with the Crimson Tide.
Dallas’ first-round pick belongs to the Oakland Raiders because of the Amari Cooper trade. The Cowboys have the No.58 overall pick in the draft.
Elliott led the league with 1,434 rushing yards in 2018.
