The Dallas Cowboys suffered their worst defeat of the 2018 NFL season in Week 9, losing at home to the Tennessee Titans 28-14 on “Monday Night Football.” With the team falling to 3-5 and two games out of first place in a very winnable division, owner Jerry Jones shot down the idea that head coach Jason Garrett might be in immediate danger of losing his job.

“I think we realize we have eight games to go, we've got a long way to go in this season," Jones told reporters Monday night, via ESPN.com. “We want to play better than we played tonight, so I certainly think each individual and coach and front-office person is going to have to do better, including me.”

Monday’s loss was Dallas’ first game since making one of the season’s biggest acquisitions. The Cowboys traded a first-round draft pick to the Oakland Raiders in exchange for Amari Cooper. The wide receiver caught five passes for 58 yards and a touchdown.

Cooper’s debut didn’t do much to help an offense that’s been lackluster all season long. Dallas was held below 20 points for the fifth time this season. Halfway through the year, the Cowboys are 27th in total offense and 26th in scoring.

Dak Prescott threw for 243 yards against Tennessee. During a season in which passing numbers are at an all-time high, the quarterback still hasn’t thrown for 275 yards or more than two touchdowns in any game. Twenty-eight quarterbacks are averaging more passing yards per game than Prescott.

Dallas blew an opportunity to pull within one game of first place in the NFC East. The Washington Redskins sit atop the division with a 5-3 record, and the Philadelphia Eagles own sole possession of second place at 4-4. The Cowboys visit the Eagles next week in a key divisional matchup.

The Cowboys missed the playoffs last year when they finished the season at 9-7. Dallas hasn’t won a postseason game in four years. It was the team’s only playoff victory since Garrett took over in 2010.

Dallas goes on the road in each of the next two weeks, visiting Philadelphia and Atlanta. The Redskins and New Orleans Saints are the only two opponents on their remaining schedule that currently have a winning record.
