A teenage couple from on the run from the law have been dubbed a 'modern-day Bonnie and Clyde', after a two-week, multi-state crime spree, which has involved auto theft, cashing stolen cheques and destruction of property.
The pair, 18-year-old Dalton Hayes and 13-year-old Cheyenne Phillips, disappeared on Jan. 3. On the same day, Hayes changed his Facebook status to 'Engaged'. Police believe the pair may have been involved in a series of burglaries in their area before they fled their Kentucky town in a stolen pick-up truck.
The pair are believed to have stolen at least two trucks on during their run from the law, at least one of which contained the owner's check book, and two firearms, ABC News reports.
The pair were subsequently caught on security cameras cashing a stolen check in a WalMart store in Manning, South Carolina Jan. 12. Authorities believe that they had also passed bad checks in Kentucky and North Carolina, and are believed to have passed through Georgia, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.
The couple began dating only recently, Hayes' mother Tammy Martin told WAVE. “I don't know why they're doing it," Martin said. "I just wish they would turn themselves in.”
Martin added that she was unaware that Phillips was only 13 years old, and said Hayes didn't know until recently, either, the station added.
Norman Chaffins, sheriff in Grayson County, Kentucky, where the pair disappeared warned that the couple's behavior is "becoming increasingly brazen and dangerous," according to CNN.
"They are becoming increasingly desperate and we just hope they have enough sense to do the right thing," he said.
When he’s caught, Hayes could face charges for luring a minor away from her guardians, WWLP reported.
Dalton's mother said: “Dalton and Cheyenne, your families love you and miss you, we want you home.”
