‘Dancing With The Stars’ 2015 Spoilers: Season 21 Casting Almost Finished; EP’s Tease 'Exciting' New Celebrity Contestants
This news will have you up and dancing! Although Season 21 of the hit ABC reality competition “Dancing With the Stars” is still a few weeks away from airing its anticipated new installment, fans of the foot-tapping series are getting a few early teasers to hold them over until “DWTS” returns this September.
During an interview with Glamour magazine, “DWTS” executive producer Rob Wade and co-executive producer Deena Katz revealed some juicy scoop about the forthcoming fall installment – like how Season 21 will differ from the action-packed 20th season.
“We’re going from celebrating [last season’s 10 anniversary] to taking risks [in Season 21],” Wade dished. “We had a really fantastic season last season with new ideas like ‘Judges’ Choice,’ so that gives us [the push] to take greater risks in our themes and competitions and challenges.”
In addition to taking risks, Wade unveiled that he and Katz were working hard to improve “the show in every single area” -- like bringing back the fan-favorite “DWTS” episode the “Switch Up”! During the “Switch Up,” the show’s professional dancers would switch celebrity partners for one night, which resulted in some seriously fun routines! However, due to the chaos surrounding the 10th anniversary installment, the amusing episode was put on the back burner.
“I think 99 percent yes,” Wade said of reprising the “Switch Up” in Season 21. “We’ve even got a little tweak to that as well. There’s going to be some surprises! We don’t do surprises to mess with people. ‘America’s Choice’ might be coming back in some way. All these things just give the couples a different challenge, and I think it’s important to do that.”
Speaking of surprises, Katz and Wade revealed the exciting news that casting for Season 21 of "DWTS" was nearly finished!
“We’re just about done. We’re close,” Katz told Glamour magazine how far along they were into casting the forthcoming show before Wade gave a more specific answer. “We’re about 4/5 of the way there. We like to be around [this number] since we’re a very current show. The premiere of the show is still over a month and a half away, which is a long time. So you want to see [who’s current in the news].”
So, what “current” stars have caught the eyes of “DWTS” execs? Well, Katz quipped that she has her sights set on adding ABC’s “Blood and Oil” actor Chase Crawford to the Season 21 cast, in addition to Caitlyn Jenner.
“I love Caitlyn Jenner, and at some point I would love her on our show,” she gushed.
Meanwhile, Wade revealed that he’d like to see a MLB star shaking it out on the dance floor.
But not every contestant on the show will be a headline-maker. The ep’s teased that fans might expect to see an ‘80s sitcom star in the upcoming season. “We like to throw the nostalgia in there,” Katz said before Wade responded to rumors that “The Champ” actor Ricky Schroder would be competing in Season 21 for the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy.
“I can’t confirm or deny!” he said. “What I can say is that I would love Ricky Schroder on the show.”
During an interview with E! Online, Season 19 winner Alfonso Ribeiro revealed that he tried to reach out to the blonde-haired child star, attempting to get Shroder to join in on the shimmying fun. But when Ribeiro finally got a hold of his buddy, Ribeiro revealed that Shroder said, “Eh, I don’t dance!”
Even though Shroder isn't confirmed to appear on Season 21, Wade dished that thus far Season 21 is "a really good cast."
"I don’t want to jinx this, but there’s a couple people in there that I was like, 'Wow, we got them.' And then you meet them and you’re like, Yeah. Oh yeah.' I’m excited, but I’m not jinxing it!" he revealed his excitement to Glamour magazine.
Fans will learn whether or not Schroder made the cut when the full cast of Season 21 is revealed on “Good Morning America” on Wednesday, Sept. 2. “Dancing With the Stars” will then return to ABC on Monday, Sept. 14.
