‘Dancing With The Stars’ Season 21 Pro Derek Hough Explains Why Team Ghostbusters Lost Week 7 Group Dance
All good things must come to an end, right Derek? On Monday night, “Dancing With the Stars” pro Derek Hough ended his long-running winning streak after his troupe, Team Ghostbusters, lost against the opposing group during Season 21’s Halloween-themed installment.
This marked Derek’s first loss in over 13 group dances. But according to the sandy-haired dancer, he’s not as upset over the Week 7 defeat as fans are.
“I think you guys are more bummed about my team dance record ending than I am!” Derek wrote in a blog post for TV Guide, adding that Team Nightmare, lead by Nick Carter, was well deserving of the perfect score that they received for their chilling routine inspired by Tim Burton’s “Nightmare Before Christmas.”
“They were just so cohesive, and the costumes and choreography were so perfect. That's gotta be one of the best team dances ever on the show,” he admitted.
So, what exactly went wrong with Derek’s group performance? Well, Bindi Irwin’s partner partially blamed their less-than-spooky routine on their song, “Ghostbusters.”
“I'm not gonna lie -- I felt like our song was a complete letdown. Maybe not ‘complete,’ but nothing against ‘Ghostbusters’ -- which I love -- but the song was less inspiring,” he noted.
During the Derek’s group dance, which he performed alongside Bindi, Alek Skarlatos and Lindsay Arnold, Alexa PenaVega and Mark Ballas, and Carlos PenaVega and Witney Carson, the ladies of the team channeled their inner ghouls while the men of Team Ghostbusters embodied the paranormal hunters from the 1984 comedy movie. But not even their ghostly routine could scare the judges from pointing out Team Ghostbuster’s mistakes.
“In the beginning, the girls -- when you were together -- you were out of sync,” judge Carrie Ann Inaba said, unable to pinpoint just who flubbed the timing of the choreography.
“I will take that,” Bindi owned up to the error, before apologizing to her team.
“Poor Bindi took the blame for getting out of sync at the beginning,” Derek noted in his blog post, admitting that she did get off timing just a little. “It was hard for her to hear and see because of our shots from the proton packs and the smoke. She just kind of gagged and went too soon. I was like, ‘Oh, no!’ It was one of those things that you could tell she was off, but it wasn't drastic.”
Fans will get to watch Derek and Bindi take on another dance-off during Week 8 of “Dancing With the Stars.” “Dancing With the Stars” airs Monday nights at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.
