'The Dark Crystal' Prequel: First Photos Released; Star-Studded Cast Unveiled
The “Dark Crystal” prequel has released its first-look photos of the Netflix show. The 10-episode series is set in the same world of Thra, which was seen in the 1982 film. The series will use a combination of puppets and computer graphics to bring the characters to life.
Pictures posted on Collider teased the three main characters of the TV series. The plot revolves around three Gelfing who discover the “horrifying secret” behind the power of the Skeksis. The adventure involves these Gelfings starting a rebellion.
The “Dark Crystal” cast members, who will be lending their voices to different characters, have also been revealed. The actors who will be voicing Gelfing characters are Natalie Dormer (“Game of Thrones”), Caitriona Balfe (“Outlander”), Helena Bonham-Carter (“The King’s Speech”), Harris Dickinson (“Maleficent 2”), Eddie Izzard (“Ocean’s Thirteen”), Shazad Latif (“Star Trek: Discovery”), Theo James (“The Divergent”), Toby Jones (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“The Cloverfield Paradox”), Mark Strong (Kingsman) and Alicia Vikander (“Tomb Raider”).

A trailer was previously released by Netflix on YouTube which showed how much effort went into the creation of the 1982 “Dark Crystal” film. The video also teased that a new TV series based on this world was being developed. Towards the end, the video teased one of the puppets of the Skeksis, which is very similar to the one seen in the film.
According to E! News, the new “Dark Crystal” TV series is set many years before the events in the 1982 film. In the series, the world of Thra is dying, and the Crystal of Truth has been damaged by the evil Skeksis.
The 1982 film, directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz, focused on restoring balance to the world of Thra. This was done with the help of a missing shard of the Dark Crystal. It remains to be seen how the TV series will explore this story and if there will be some connection to the film.
A release date for “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” has not yet been announced. The show is expected to premiere sometime in 2019. More details should be announced in the coming weeks.
