Is DC Universe’s ‘Swamp Thing’ Canceled Or Renewed For Season 2?
DC Universe’s live-action “Swamp Thing” series, which premiered on the streaming platform at the end of May, ends its first season on Friday with the release of episode 10, titled “Loose Ends.”
After watching the Season 1 finale episode, viewers will be left wondering when Season 2 will come out, or if there even will be another season.
Unfortunately for fans, the show did not get renewed for more episodes. Instead, news that the show had been canceled arrived just a few days after the first episode dropped a few months ago.
Originally set to have a 13-episode first season, that number was cut down to 10 in April, after production shut down early. This happened just a couple of months before the show’s cancellation was revealed and meant there would only be 10 episodes of the show in its overall run.
Although the reason for the quick cancellation of the series has not been confirmed by DC Universe, it’s possible an accounting error by the House of Representatives’ appropriations committee in North Carolina, where “Swamp Thing” was filmed, regarding television production funding grants, as well as the show’s large budget, is to blame.
This led fans to trend “#SaveSwampThing” on Twitter and to petition for the streaming service to find a way to make Season 2 happen. These efforts have not yet gotten DC Universe to reverse its decision.
Although Friday’s Season 1 finale doubles as the show’s series finale, “Swamp Thing” producer Mark Verheiden promises a bit of resolution, as well as a post-credits scene.
“Dropping this Friday -- the final episode of #SwampThing 2019,” he wrote on Twitter. “Expect some resolution, some strangeness, maybe even some tears. And whatever you do, STICK AROUND after the credits for... well, you’ll just have to see!”
The show’s cast includes Crystal Reed (Dr. Abby Arcane), Virginia Madsen (Maria Sunderland), Andy Bean (Alec Holland), Derek Mears (Swamp Thing), Henderson Wade (Matt Cable), Maria Sten (Liz Tremayne), Jeryl Prescott (Madame Xanadu), Jennifer Beals (Sheriff Lucilia Cable), Will Patton (Avery Sunderland) and Kevin Durand (Jason Woodrue)
James Wan, Verheiden, Gary Dauberman, Michael Clear and Len Wiseman are executive producers on the series.
This marks the first show cancellation for DC Universe, which only just launched in late 2018. The platform’s other already-released live-action series, “Titans” and “Doom Patrol,” have both been renewed for second seasons.
Subscribers can also expect a new live-action show, “Stargirl,” to premiere in early 2020. Plus, animated series “Harley Quinn” is slated to debut in October.
The Season 1 and series finale of “Swamp Thing” releases on DC Universe on Friday.
