‘Death Note’ Star Nat Wolff Reacts To Joining Sam Claflin In Crime-Thriller ‘Semper Fi’

“Death Note” actor Nat Wolff is thrilled to join Sam Claflin in the Henry-Alex Rubin’s crime thriller “Semper Fi.”

Shortly after his casting was announced, Wolff took to Twitter to express how excited he is about the film.

According to Deadline, Claflin plays the lead role of Hopper, while Wolff portrays Hopper’s sibling Oyster. Hopper is described as a straitlaced police officer who spends his downtime as a Sergeant in the Marine Corps Reservists together with a group of life-long friends. Hopper and his rowdy yet loyal friends look out for each other no matter what, including keeping an eye out for Hopper’s younger, reckless brother Oyster.

When Oyster kills a man by accident in a bar-room scuffle and attempts to get away from it by trying to flee town, Hopper stops him and forces him to face the consequences of his actions.

Afflicted with guilt at leaving Oyster confined in prison, Hopper and his friends are deployed to Iraq. When they come back home from war, a battle-weary Hopper finds out that Oyster’s final court appeal has been rejected. Tired of living with guilt, Hopper ultimately decides to save his brother by breaking him out of prison no matter what the cost. Hopper’s friends Jaeger, Daddy and Snowball support his decision, and together they embark on a mission to put an end to an injustice they can no longer ignore.

Rubin and Sean Mullin wrote the script for the movie, which will be produced by Oscar-nominated David Lancaster (“Whiplash,” “Nightcrawler”) of Rumble Films and Karina Miller (“To the Bone”) from Sparkhouse Media.

“I’ve been watching Nat’s performances over the past few years and he reminds me of young [Leonardo] DiCaprio — he’s highly likeable yet always mischievous and unpredictable,” Rubin said of Wolff in a statement to Variety.

“Oyster is a deliciously complex character — he’s part dreamer, part rebel, part man and part boy,” Miller said of Wolff’s character in the film. “His emotional arc is so engaging and extreme that I can’t help but get excited by the thought of watching an actor with Nat’s talent bring this character to life.”

Cornerstone Films is currently shopping “Semper Fi” to buyers in Cannes and CAA co-represents the film’s U.S. rights.

Wolff was last seen in James Franco’s 2016 drama film “In Dubious Battle,” which is based on John Steinbeck’s novel of the same name. The 22-year-old actor will be seen next in the supernatural thriller film “Death Note,” which is a live-action adaptation of the manga series of the same name by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. The Adam Wingard-directed film will open in theaters on Aug. 25.

Wolff is also part of the cast of the upcoming romantic comedy film “Home Again,” which also stars Reese Witherspoon, Candice Bergen, Michael Sheen, Lake Bell, Reid Scott and Pico Alexander, among many others. The Hallie Meyers-Shyer –directed movie is slated to be released on Sept. 8, 2017.

In addition to “Semper Fi,” Wolff is also set to star in romantic comedy film “Rosy” and in action-drama flick “The Kill Team.”
