The giant moving fortress houses two types of people. The people who excel in combat are the Gears and the ones who do menial jobs inside the fortress are Tankers.

“Deca-Dence” Episode 1 named "Sprocket" sets the premise of the series and showcases a battle between the Gears and Gadoll. The story revolves around Natsume, who lost her father and her hand during a Gadoll attack. She wants to become a fighter but being a Tanker, she cannot opt to be part of the Gears.

After graduation, Tankers are assigned jobs and Natsume gets the job of a cleaner under an armor repairman named Kaburagi.

Natsume tells Kaburagi about her desire to join the Power and fight alongside Gears against Gadoll. However, Kaburagi seems disinterested and tells her she is a cleaner and will be one for a long time. He adds an armor repairer has to remain an armor repairer and that is the reality of “Deca-Dence.”

Toward the second half of the premiere episode, a group of Gadoll are detected by the command center and the fans meet Commander General Minato. Six mid-size species – avispine, octhulhu, seldurum, nemollis, burrn and spoonwormer – are advancing toward the fortress. They are 65 in number along with one large-size Gadoll named giland.

Due to a mishap, Natsume and Kaburagi end up between Gears and the Gadoll. Natsume finds out Kaburagi is a veteran Gear member. Will he train her to become a soldier?
