A heartbroken mother in India allegedly killed herself after her 6-month-old baby died due to a heart ailment.

The incident took place Monday in the southern state of Karnataka, media reports said Wednesday. The body of the 26-year-old woman, a resident of the city of Bengaluru, was found hanging in a room by her husband, India Today reported.

The authorities said the couple's baby was born with a cardiac issue and the duo had made all efforts to get the child treated. However, the baby died Monday morning after the woman's husband, Santhosh, left for work. Depressed over the loss of her child, the woman, identified only as Pallavi, decided to end her life.

The incident came to light after her husband, who worked as a lab technician at a nearby hospital, returned home in the evening, and found the door of a room locked. Santhosh then broke opened the door as there was no response from inside, and found his wife dead.

The man also found a note in the room in which she wrote her husband took care of her and loved her immensely. Pallavi also wrote her husband had to suffer a lot because of her.

Pallavi, who had been married to Santhosh for three years, had suffered a miscarriage earlier, Gulf News reported. This time, she had given birth to her child prematurely in the seventh month of pregnancy. The child was born with a heart ailment, the doctors had told the couple at the time of birth.

Even though the baby had shown progress during the treatment, Pallavi had developed depression over the health condition of her child, the police reportedly said.

The police sent the woman's body for an autopsy and launched an investigation into the incident.

According to the latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau, the number of people killing themselves in India rose 10 percent from 2019 to an all-time high of 1,53,052 in 2020.
