KEY POINTS

  • Exotic gear offer unique and powerful effects that can shape playstyles
  • These items are very rare and are often locked behind difficult content
  • Some exotic items can only be acquired through expansion packs or season passes

Exotic equipment are some of the most coveted items in “Destiny 2” next to perfectly-rolled purple items, as they provide players with the most unique and interesting effects that can drastically alter builds and playstyles.

As such, exotic items are incredibly rare. Players won’t come across these weapons as easily as the others but with enough patience and a bit of luck, even the most elusive of exotic gear can be acquired. However, do take note that most of the new exotics will be locked behind the season pass or expansion packs, so F2P players will have to spend money to gain access to those.

Here’s a quick guide on how to get exotics in “Destiny 2.”

Xur – Weekly Merchant

The special vendor Xur restocks his inventory of exotic items every week. Players simply have to find him and spend a certain amount of legendary shards in order to get an exotic item. He usually offers one weapon and one armor piece for each of the three classes.

Xur randomly spawns in one preset location found across one of the available areas of the game.

Monument To Lost Lights

Exotics from previous seasons can be obtained via the Monument to Lost Lights found on the Tower, right between the Vault terminals. Here, players can spend a certain amount of resources in order to obtain the specific exotic item of their choosing, making this a reliable-yet-expensive way of obtaining equipment.

Exotic Quests

Every season, players can pick up exotic quests that will reward exotic weapons or armor pieces upon completion. These quests will change depending on the season, so players will have to pay close attention to whatever main activity is available.

Heroic Events

Public events can reward players with exotic engrams so long as their Heroic versions are completed. Heroic Public Events must be manually triggered by completing certain objectives that vary between each event, such as destroying ether siphons or Taken rifts before the event’s actual objective is accomplished.

Season Pass

Lastly, players can get some exotic items through the season pass. Simply progress through enough levels to unlock the exotics locked behind each tier.
