'Destiny 2' Officially Announced, September Release Date Likely
Destiny 2 is coming, according to the game's Twitter account.
The news has been hinted at through various sources, as publisher Activision said in an earnings call last year the company had plans for a sequel to the original Destiny. Leaked posters from an Italian retailer earlier this month also featured branding for Destiny 2 and a beta. But Monday's announcement is the first official confirmation of Destiny 2 from developer Bungie. The game is slated to be released in September.
The original Destiny was released in late 2014 and marked Bungie's first major property since the Halo franchise. Bungie has regularly updated the game with new events and content since then, including major expansion packs The Dark Below (also released in late 2014), 2015's The Taken King and 2016's Rise of Iron.

Few details have been officially confirmed yet about Destiny 2, but Bungie is speculated to be taking a nearly clean slate to the game's settings and some of its characters. Fans on Twitter have also poured over Bungie's Twitter image for potential clues. As Twitter user Nibel, via Polygon, pointed out, the teaser photo appears to be The Last City from the original Destiny.
