Actor Dev Patel reportedly helped stop a knife fight after a woman allegedly stabbed a man in Australia. The 32-year-old actor was later questioned by the police about the incident.

Patel, who was popularly known for playing Jamal Malik in "Slumdog Millionaire" and Saroo Brierley in "Lion," witnessed a knife fight in Adelaide city, where he lived with his Australian girlfriend, actress Tilda Cobham-Hervey.

The incident took place Monday evening around 8.45 p.m. when the actor was at Gouger Street. Patel reportedly saw a couple fighting, and revealed to the police the woman stabbed the man in his chest, according to 7News.

Patel was accompanied by his friends when the incident took place. His representatives confirmed the news Tuesday, and shared, "Dev acted on his natural instinct to try and de-escalate the situation and break up the fight."

"The group was thankfully successful in doing so, and they remained on site to ensure that the police and eventually the ambulance arrived," the representatives added.

The representatives further said they were hoping the "same level of media attention this story is receiving (solely because Dev, as a famous person, was involved) can be a catalyst for lawmakers to be compassionate in determining long-term solutions to help not only the individuals who were involved but the community at large."

The man, who was allegedly stabbed, was treated by the ambulance officers at the scene before being taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital. The woman was immediately arrested at the scene, and charged with aggravated assault.

A video of Patel being questioned by the police following the incident on the same street was shared on Twitter.

On the work front, the actor rose to fame from "Slumdog Millionaire," which was released in 2008. He then went on to work in various projects including "The Road Within," "The Newsroom," "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" and "The Man Who Knew Infinity."

Patel was last seen in the fantasy adventure movie, "The Green Knight," which was released last year in July. He will be next seen in the movie, "Monkey Man," which will also mark his directorial debut movie.

The actor will also appear in a comedy movie, "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar," which is under post-production.
