Did John Mayer Write ‘Paper Doll’ About Taylor Swift? Singer Enlists ‘Prancercise’ Star Johanna Rohrback In Lyric Video [WATCH]
John Mayer’s new song “Paper Doll” has many people believing it could be about former flame Taylor Swift. The starlet once wrote a song entitled “Dear John,” which many think is about the “Half of My Heart” singer. Could this be payback?
“Here’s a dress of gold and blue. Sure was fun being good to you,” Mayer sings, continually mentioning dresses throughout the song. In Swift’s 2010 breakup hit she refers to herself as “the girl in the dress [who] cried all the way home.”
One of her newest hits, “22,” also seems to appear in Mayer’s “Paper Doll.” He sings in the chorus, “You’re like 22 girls in one/and none of them know what they’re running from,” which also picks up on the line in “Dear John” when the 23-year-old says, “and regret how I ignored when they said ‘Run as fast as you can.’”
If that wasn’t enough, there’s one more line in the 35-year-old’s song that similar to Swift's. “Someone’s gonna paint you another sky,” from his song is pretty close to the “Dear John” lyric, “You paint me a blue sky and go back and turn it to rain.”
Though the blonde beauty has never blatantly said “Dear John” was about Mayer, he told Rolling Stone in a 2012 interview the song "made me feel terrible . . . because I didn't deserve it."
"["Dear John" is] cheap songwriting," Mayer added. "It's abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, 'Wait til he gets a load of this!' That's bulls--t . . . It really humiliated me at a time when I'd already been dressed down."
As an interesting side note, Johanna Rohrback, who is best known for her “prancercise” video, is the leading lady in Mayer’s “Paper Doll” lyric video. The new single is from his upcoming sixth studio album called “Paradise Valley.” Check it out below:
