Did Oprah Winfrey Just Hint At Joining 2020 Presidential Race?
Is Oprah Winfrey running for president in 2020?
Many are wondering if "The Oprah Winfrey Show" host is joining the political realm in the next national election. Winfrey's latest tweet may have hinted that she might. "Thanks for your VOTE of confidence! Democrats' best hope for 2020: Oprah," Winfrey, 63, wrote on Twitter.
Winfrey's tweet linked to an article from New York Post suggesting that the talk show host is a great candidate for the Democrats in 2020. Winfrey is a match to Donald Trump's celebrity status. In fact, she is more famous on TV than the President of the United States.
"If you need to set a thief to catch a thief, you need a star — a grand, outsized, fearless star whom Trump can neither intimidate nor outshine — to catch a star. We’re through the looking glass here. America is discarding old approaches in politics. Democrats will have to do the same to match the mood to the moment," the article read. "And that’s where Oprah Winfrey comes in. She is the mirror image of Trump, but more so. "
The article added that based on a 2008 study at the University of Maryland, Winfrey is behind the over 1 million votes cast for Obama in the Democratic contest. The writer is calling Oprah to be more than an anti-Trump and to start her political journey so she can represent the right of the people. However, it remains a question of weather the "Greenleaf" actress is willing to take the challenge.
Winfrey's tweet garnered a huge support from her followers. Several endorsed the idea to her. Meanwhile, another one suggested, "If she can win, let her run. We need a Democrat who can win. Full stop."
According to Us Weekly, back in March, Winfrey told Bloomberg that she has never contemplated running for a political position. However, Trump's presidency has changed the playing field for her.
In related news, Winfrey just joined CBS' "60 Minutes." Her first story, which premiered last Sunday, examined the political division in the country. According to the show's executive producer, Jeff Fager, Winfrey wanted to make stories that have an impact. He added that they had invited her five years ago, but she was too busy at that time.
