'Dirty Dancing' Star Jennifer Grey Talks About Her Own Life-Saving Abortion

Jennifer Grey opened up about her own abortion story, revealing how it saved her life, weeks after the Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade landmark decision.

"I feel so emotional," the 62-year-old actress told The Los Angeles Times Thursday about the court's decision, ETCanada reported. "Even though I’ve seen it coming, even though we’ve been hearing what’s coming, it doesn’t feel real."

Grey, who is popularly known for her performance in the 1987 movie, "Dirty Dancing," went on to share her own abortion story. She explained how she always wanted to have a child but not as a teenager, and the abortion law at that time helped her save her own life.

"It’s such a grave decision. And it stays with you," she said.

"I wouldn’t have my life," she added. "I wouldn’t have had the career I had, I wouldn’t have had anything. And it wasn’t for lack of taking it seriously. I’d always wanted a child. I just didn’t want a child as a teenager. I didn’t want a child where I was [at] in my life."

Grey said that the Supreme Court’s decision is fundamentally wrong and encouraged women to speak up about it now.

"It is sounding a bell for all women to rise up and use their voice now because we have assumed, since 1973, that our choice was safe and that it was never going to be overturned," she told the outlet.

Grey is not the only celebrity who slammed the overturning of the Roe v. Wade decision. Many celebs including Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Madonna, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish and Pink also took to social media to condemn the ruling.

Roe v. Wade was the Supreme Court's landmark decision made on Jan. 22, 1973. It protected a pregnant woman's right to choose if she wants to have an abortion or not.

On the work front, Grey has appeared in TV series like "Grey's Anatomy," "The Conners" and "Dollface." She will be next seen in an untitled "Dirty Dancing" project, which will be helmed by director Jonathan Levine. The project is expected to be released in February 2024.
