Disney Lawsuit: Why The Entertainment Company Is Being Sued Over Its ‘Frozen 2’ Merchandise
A lawsuit has been filed against Disney (DIS) over its “Frozen 2” merchandise, claiming the company ripped off the slogan from a breast cancer awareness company that has reportedly been using the tagline since at least 2007.
Disney has been using the slogan “Trust Your Journey” on its “Frozen 2” merchandise, featuring the characters Anna and Elsa from the movie. The “Trust Your Journey” theme rings throughout the movie but didn’t become an issue for Disney until it started creating products that featured it.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the Nevada-based Trust Your Journey company filed the suit, claiming that Disney is illegally using its slogan on items such as T-shirts, posters, and jewelry even after the company trademarked the phrase.
Trust Your Journey said the slogan is not new for the company as it has a line of merchandise that features the slogan, including clothing, jewelry, and mugs, which are sold at gift shops, QVC, and Cracker Barrel gift shops, the news outlet said. The company has reportedly grossed nearly $4 million off the “Trust Your Journey” trademarked merchandise.
In its lawsuit, Trust Your Journey wants Disney to stop using the slogan and to give the company a portion of its “Frozen 2” movie profits, which are nearing $1 billion, according to TMZ.
Shares of Disney stock were up 0.36% as of 10:57 a.m. EST on Thursday.
