Doctors Missed Teen’s Dangerous Medical Condition During Routine MRI, Teen Dies After
KEY POINTS
- A teenager died after a routine MRI scan, which failed to detect a dangerous health condition
- She had a heart condition and was still given an anesthetic
- The coroner said that lack of medical management contributed to her death
A teenager passed away days after her routine MRI scan. It was found that she died because of a dangerous medical condition that the doctors failed to spot during her routine MRI scan.
The family of Alice Sloman, 14 years old, was devastated after she died from a dangerous medical condition, which doctors were not able to detect during the scan. According to a New York Post report, she died from heart failure days only after she was anesthetized for the procedure.
The inquest into Alice’s untimely death showed that the teen was suffering from a medical condition, which made her heart bigger than usual. It was twice as big as the normal size of the heart.
According to the report, the teen was prescribed with anesthetic to help in treating anxiety. This was before the October 2018 scan to look into the headaches. After the MRI difficulty, Alice was then rushed to the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.
The parents of Alice revealed that they had constantly been complaining to the doctors about the symptoms of their daughter. They told her that she was already suffering from breathlessness.
As per the coroner, the decisions that did not check all the conditions of the teen has resulted in her dying prematurely and unexpectedly. Coroner Dr. Simon Fox, QC, said that the teen died because the medical management was lacking.
There were four medical conditions that played a role in Alice’s death, as per Dr. Fox. He pointed out multiple organ failure, mitochondrial disease, myocardial fibrosis, and heart failure during the anesthetic. Aside from this, the teen also had autism and was struggling with hypermobility. She also has a visual impairment.
Because of what happened to Alice, her parents have set up a campaign to help change the medical procedures. They advocate that a routine heart check must be made so as to avoid the same thing that happened to their daughter.
Recalling the painful event when the doctors told the mom that they could no longer do anything for her, she recounted, “They took us in a room and told us there’s nothing they can do for her — she’s going to die. We said we didn’t have time to digest this. It had been nine hours since she was playing Lego cards with me, then you get told she’s going to die. I asked them, please, just try something to bring her back.”
