A dog had to be euthanized after it was doused in acid and suffered horrific injuries, Tuesday.

A female Staffordshire bull terrier, named Patch, was found outside a woman’s home in Northern Ireland. After noticing that the dog had severe acid burns all over the body, Hannah Marriott, who found the dog on her doorstep, decided to take the animal in. However, its injuries were too serious to be treated and hence it had to be put down, the Sun reported.

"Police received a report about an injured dog in the Pound Road area of Newry at approximately 6:10 p.m. [1:10 p.m. EDT] on Tuesday, 28 May. The animal was taken to a local vet, however, due to the severity of its injuries the dog had to be euthanized,” Inspector McCullough, of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, said.

Authorities were still searching for the suspect who could have inflicted the injuries on the dog.

Marriott said she was disgusted by such an act of animal cruelty. "Whoever did this to this poor dog are sick, sick people,” she said.

Liam Fitzsimons, of Newry Veterinary Centre, who examined the dog, said there wasn’t much he could do to treat it.

“You could smell the burning off the animal and the skin was falling away,” he told BBC. “The dog’s tongue was ulcerated as it was licking the acid off of its skin. In thirty years of practice, I have never seen anything like this. This is the worst case of animal cruelty I have ever come across. I will take this case to my grave. There is a monster on the loose in Newry. If they can do this to a dog, they can do it to a human."

Pets Lost and Found Northern Ireland, a local animal welfare group, requested anyone with information about the attack to contact the police.

"This happened in the Newry area. The poor dog was covered in acid. If anyone has information about this incident or the dog please call,” the group said in a statement.

Earlier this week, a Canadian woman was fined and banned from owning or caring for animals for 15 years after she left her dog and cat in inhumane conditions in a plastic bin inside a storage unit. Samantha Zychowski, who was 21 at the time of the incident, was found guilty of animal cruelty charges after police discovered a pit bull in a crate and a domestic shorthair cat stuffed in a box under some belongings at the unit, owned by her. The head of the cat was wrapped with duct tape, officials said.
